Facial recognition is the process of identifying or verifying the identity of a person using their face. It captures, analyses, and compares patterns based on the person’s facial details.
Using technology to identify people is sometimes called biometric recognition or biometric security. Fingerprint readers, voice identification and recognition and retina scanning, are other examples of biometrics. This type of technology is applied at high-security sites, the MOD and law enforcement. However, more common applications of this software are installed in smartphones and laptop computers.
The key steps in facial recognition are:
- Face detection
- Recording detected faces
- Match recorded faces with those stored in a database
- Automatic process to find the closest match
