Classes of Fire
In the UK, our classification system BS EN-3 refers to (Classification of fires) as follows:
- Class A – organic solids e.g. paper or wood
- Class B – flammable or combustible liquids
- Class C – flammable gases
- Class D – combustible metals
- Class F – cooking fat and oil
Classes of Fire extinguisher
Fire extinguishers are designed to tackle specific types of fire. There are several different types of fire extinguisher designed to deal with different fire classifications:
- CO2: CO2 extinguishers are ideal for fires involving electrical equipment.
- Water: Standard water extinguishers are designed to deal with Class A fires only.
- Water Additive: Water Additive extinguishers are similar to the traditional water extinguishers, designed to tackle Class A fires. However, chemical additives make these extinguishers more effective.
- AFFF Foam: AFFF Foam extinguishers are an effective option for A and B class fires, which makes them a good option for many different environments.
- Dry Powder: Dry Powder extinguishers are versatile, being effective on all but Class F.
- Wet Chemical: Wet chemical extinguishers are often found in commercial kitchens (F Class).
- Fire blankets: Fire blankets are primarily for use on hot oil fires. They can also be used on someone whose clothing has caught fire.
