Fire Stopping

Passive Fire Protection to prevent the spread of fire and smoke

Fire Stopping effectively seals the paths that fire and smoke can pass through in buildings, which returns the integrity of the fire-rated elements that have been breached. Buildings are full of services, such as cables, pipes, and ducting; where these services penetrate fire-resisting elements of the building, they create a weakness in the compartmentation, which can compromise the fire protection of the building.

Structural Fire Safety is improved through passive fire protection

Why is Fire Stopping Required?

Fire Stopping is an essential component of structural fire safety and a part of passive fire protection. All new refurbishments and buildings must incorporate fire compartmentation measures following the UK building regulations. By designing buildings this way, compartmentalisation ensures that fire is contained at its origin and slows down flames and smoke. This saves lives by increasing the time people have to escape and reducing structural damage, making the building less likely to collapse.

Fire Stops

Fire stops are crucial as the practical solution for preventing the spread of fire and smoke within all buildings. By fire stopping voids and any services passing through them, such as cables, pipes and ductwork, we can ensure compliance and effective performance of these structural elements in a fire.

Passive Fire Protection Specialists

Our specialist teams cover all aspects of passive fire protection with a range of firestop products adhering to approved industry regulations from fire doors, fire barriers, batt & mastic and fire sealing compounds. We provide the most efficient and cost-effective solutions using the highest quality accredited and tested materials.

Effective fire compartmentation keeps fire and smoke isolated and controlled
Fire Compartmentation

Fire stopping is part of the passive fire protection for a building and is the practice of reinstating fire compartmentation or barriers which have been penetrated. The purpose is to prevent the spread of fire and smoke and keep it within zones or compartments. This prevents escape routes from becoming smoke logged to facilitate escape. Fire compartmentation is achieved by dividing the premises into ‘fire compartments’ through the use of fire doors, floors and walls of fire-resisting construction, cavity barriers within roof voids and fire stopping to services that penetrate through these dividing elements.

    Fire Stopping Regulations

Passive fire protection protects from fire and smoke for a specified period, such as 60 minutes. To comply with UK passive fire protection regulations, all installation products must meet fire resistance ratings following British standards. The differing standards are dependent on the unique requirements of the building(s) and the types of materials used.
